RUBIK

“Rubik” is finally out - the first book written by Giorgia Giannini with photographs by Kelly Rosa

On Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, at noon, 22-year-old Giorgia Giannini published her first poetry collection, titled Rubik (published by G.C.L. Editions), in collaboration with photographer Kelly Rosa.

Rubik is an introspective journey, without filters and barriers, through 18 poems and photographs. The book reveals the secrets and most vulnerable aspects of a young and fragile soul, aiming to dismantle the negative connotation of feeling complicated.

"It happened to me often during adolescence that I felt like a Rubik's cube, and I think I am not the only one. Fragile, misunderstood, and unable to accept my vulnerability. By calling this book Rubik, I wanted to create a safe space where people can feel less alone and more accepted, extending a hand to those who are trying to find their way," says Giorgia, explaining why the title of her first work.

Rubik speaks of a clouded mind, a beating heart, feelings, and memories. The black and white photographs make a deeper contribution to creating a fluid connection between the poems, focusing on bodies and anatomical forms, and hinting at a more relatable dramatic aesthetic. They narrate that suffocating and incomprehensible world described in the poems, digging deep into the reader's soul.

"It is a bit like attributing meaning to a tattoo. To attribute meaning to them would be reductive in that for me they are a visual and albeit personal interpretation of what Giorgia has written. And I would like these photos to remain open to interpretation in turn so that everyone is ready to create their own story," Kelly adds about the meaning of her photographs within the book.

The two authors agree that we as human beings tend to push our lives forward every day in this fast-paced reality, neglecting time to stop, listen, and reflect. We tend to rush from place to place forcing ourselves to be the best version of ourselves, without even knowing what that is, and condemning ourselves for the mistakes we make. This is how they decided to bring Rubik's to life.
